Moon rituals are small, deliberate practices timed to the phases of the moon — a journal page at the new moon, a release ritual at the full moon, a jar of water left out overnight. Nothing supernatural is required to do one. This page is home base if you’re starting from zero: every moon guide on Cosmic Woke, what each one actually covers, and where I’d have you begin.
That’s the tidy definition. Here’s my honest one.
A moon ritual is a recurring appointment with yourself that you didn’t have to schedule. The moon fills and empties roughly every twenty-nine and a half days whether or not you’re paying attention, and if you hang a small practice on that rhythm, you get a built-in pause every couple of weeks. I don’t think the moon is doing anything to me. I think the calendar is, and I’ve stopped needing that distinction to be more dramatic than it is.
So I read the phases the way I read angel numbers and animal signs: as structure and mirror, not instruction. Take what resonates, leave the rest.
Start here
If you only open one thing today, make it the full moon ritual guide. Two reasons. First, the full moon is the phase you can actually see, so you don’t need a calendar or an app to know it’s happening — you look up, it’s obvious, and that removes the most common excuse for never starting. Second, releasing something is an easier first move than deciding what you want. Most people arrive knowing exactly what they’d like to put down, and far less sure what they’re reaching for. Start with the easier honesty.
The moon guides so far

|---|---|---|
| Full moon ritual | The five steps — release journaling, candle, moon water, cleansing, intention reset — and why a tea light in an old salsa jar on a Chicago fire escape still counted | Full moon ritual for beginners → |
| New moon ritual | When to do it, the almost-nothing you need, journal prompts you can borrow word for word, and a crystals section I labeled optional and never required | New moon ritual for beginners → |
| Full moon calendar | All thirteen 2026 full moon dates with their traditional names, the supermoons, the May blue moon, the two eclipses, and one small ritual idea per month | 2026 full moon calendar → |
| Moon water | How to make it, seven grounded ways to use it, when to skip it — plus my blunt admission that no lab on earth would find moonlight in that jar | Moon water, start to finish → |
Four guides so far. This page grows every time another one lands.
How I’d read these in order
Read the full moon ritual first, then do it — badly, in pajamas, that’s the point. Two weeks later, when the sky has gone dark again, read the new moon guide and write one sentence about what you want; mine was I want to feel like myself again, and it held up better than anything more polished would have. Once you’ve been through both halves of the cycle once, open the calendar and pencil the next few full moons into whatever you actually use, because knowing a date is coming is most of what makes this stick. Save moon water for last — it’s the most optional thing on this page and the easiest to mistake for the practice itself. Four guides, roughly one lunar cycle. There’s no test at the end.
What phase is it tonight?
I built a free Moon Phase Tonight tracker for exactly the moment this page tends to create — you’ve decided you’d like to do something, and you have no idea where the moon currently is. No email, no signup. It tells you the phase, and then you can decide whether you feel like doing anything about it.
| Phase | The nudge I’d give you |
|---|---|
| New moon | Write one honest sentence about what you want. One is plenty. Nobody has to read it. |
| Waxing | Take the smallest real action on that sentence. This is the watering part, not the wishing part. |
| Full moon | Name one thing you’re ready to put down, out loud if you can manage it. Also the classic night to set a jar out. |
| Waning | Tidy something, rest, let it go quietly. Nothing is required of you in this stretch, and that’s allowed. |
Common questions
Do I have to do the ritual on the exact night?
No. I aim for the night of, land within a day or two either side most months, and miss entirely sometimes. The moon is full for a night, but the pause you’re taking isn’t that precise. If Tuesday is the evening you actually have forty quiet minutes, Tuesday is your full moon. The calendar is a prompt, not a deadline.
Do I need crystals, candles, or anything special?
No. A grocery-store candle and a cheap notebook is the whole kit, and that’s genuinely how I started on an apartment floor in Chicago. Crystals are lovely and completely optional — I treat them as anchors for attention, never as required equipment. If a shopping list is what’s standing between you and starting, throw the list out and start tonight.
Is a full moon a bad night for anything?
Not on this site. No phase here is a bad sign or something to brace against — that framing trades on fear, and fear shuts down the honest reflection that makes any of this worth doing. Plenty of people say they feel restless around a full moon; I can’t tell you why, and I won’t build anything frightening on top of it. I read every phase as an invitation.
Does moon water actually do anything?
Nothing measurable, and I say so plainly in the moon water guide. The water is unchanged in the morning. What changed is that you chose a jar, carried it outside, said what it was for, and remembered the next day when you saw it on the counter. That’s the mechanism, and it’s a real one. It just isn’t chemistry.
What if I skip a whole cycle?
Then you skipped a cycle. Nothing is broken, nothing is offended, and no streak was lost, because there’s no streak. The next new moon arrives in under thirty days without being asked. This is a practice you’re allowed to leave and come back to, which is honestly the only kind I’ve ever kept.
Where to go next
If the moon pulled you in, two nearby home bases may be next: crystals for the stones that keep showing up in these rituals, and manifestation for what to do with an intention once you’ve written it down. Everything free lives on the tools page.
