The seven chakras are a map of energy centers running from the base of the spine to the crown, each traditionally linked to a body region, a color, a symbol and a theme — safety, creativity, will, love, voice, insight, connection. This page is for anyone who wants the system explained plainly, without being told something in them is broken. Nothing here is a diagnosis.
That’s the tidy definition. Here’s my honest one.
The chakra system is a set of seven questions with addresses. Am I safe? Am I making anything? Do I want what I say I want? Who do I love, and how badly did that go? Am I saying the true thing? What do I already know? What is all of this part of? Somebody, a very long time ago, decided those questions live in the body in a particular order, and gave each one a lotus and a syllable so you’d have somewhere to put your attention while you asked.
I find that genuinely useful, and I don’t need it to be anatomy. So I read chakras the way I read angel numbers and animal signs: as mirrors, not machinery. Take what resonates, leave the rest.
Start here
If you read one thing on this page, make it Chakra Colors Explained. It’s the shortest route into the whole system — seven colors, seven body regions, seven themes, in order — and it’s also the guide that tells you the truth about where the familiar red-to-violet rainbow actually came from, which is much more recent than most of the internet lets on. Knowing that up front changes how you hold everything else: you stop treating the chart as a law of nature and start treating it as a filing system somebody built, which is exactly what makes it usable.
The guides so far
| Guide | What it actually answers | Read it |
|---|---|---|
| Chakra colors | What each of the seven colors traditionally points at — and why the red-to-violet rainbow is a 1970s Western arrangement, not an ancient one | Read it → |
| Chakra symbols | What’s actually inside each lotus: petal counts, Sanskrit seed syllables, the geometry — plus the parts Western versions quietly drop | Read it → |
| Crystal chakra wands | How to hold one and move it slowly, and how to spot dyed or glass stones before you buy. Mine sat on a windowsill for four months before I understood it’s a pointer, not an instrument | Read it → |
| Heart chakra crystals | The eight green and pink stones — rose quartz, jade, malachite, rhodonite, kunzite and the rest — why the heart is the only chakra with two colors, and how to tell serpentine sold as jade | Read it → |
| Sacral chakra affirmations | Forty lines for creativity and emotional flow, plus why certain affirmations can feel hollow to say, and how I reword them so they still feel true on a day when nothing is coming | Read it → |
| Root chakra affirmations | Forty lines for safety and belonging, why “I am safe” can land wrong, and the order I use: settle the body first, say the words second | Read it → |
Six guides so far. This page grows as I write more of the seven.
How I’d read these in order
Start with the colors, because it’s the map and it takes ten minutes. Then read the symbols guide, because it’s the older, stranger, more specific version of the same thing, and reading it second makes the color chart feel like the abridged edition it is. From there, stop reading and pick one chakra — the one whose question you flinched at. If that’s safety or belonging, the root affirmations are the gentlest doorway; if it’s grief or a person you’re arguing with in your head, go to the heart stones. Save the wand guide for last, when you already know what you’d be pointing it at.
The seven, at a glance
| Chakra | Color | Where you feel it | Guide on this site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Root (muladhara) | Red | Base of the spine, legs, feet | Root chakra affirmations |
| Sacral (svadhisthana) | Orange | Low in the pelvis, below the navel | Sacral chakra affirmations |
| Solar plexus (manipura) | Yellow | Above the navel, under the ribs | Coming soon |
| Heart (anahata) | Green, and pink | Center of the chest | Heart chakra crystals |
| Throat (vishuddha) | Blue | Throat, jaw, the back of the neck | Coming soon |
| Third eye (ajna) | Indigo | Between the brows | Coming soon |
| Crown (sahasrara) | Violet | Top of the head, or just above it | Coming soon |
The colors and symbols guides cover all seven, so nothing on that list is a dead end — the “coming soon” rows just don’t have a deep-dive of their own yet.
A small practice, if you want one tonight
This takes about six minutes and needs nothing you have to buy.
Sit down and pick one. Not the one you think you should work on. The one on the list above whose question made you look away.
Put a hand there. Actual hand, actual spot — chest, belly, base of the spine if you can reach around comfortably. A stone works too if you have one, and so does nothing at all. The point is that your attention now has an address.
Breathe there for two minutes. Not specially. Just let the breath be the thing you’re following, and let your attention keep coming back to the hand every time it wanders off to your inbox. It will wander off to your inbox.
Say one sentence out loud. One line from the affirmations guides, or one of your own — but word it so it’s checkable rather than wishful. “I am learning what steady feels like” is the kind of line that, for me, still feels true on a bad Tuesday. “I am completely fearless” does not, and my own body calls the bluff.
Write one line down. What came up while your hand was there. That’s the actual output. The candle is optional, though I always light one.
Common questions
Do I have to believe in chakras for this to be worth doing?
No, and I’d rather you didn’t take my word for any of it. I came to this from full arms-crossed skepticism. What I can say is that putting a hand on your chest and asking an honest question is what it does for me, whether or not there’s anything spinning under your palm — take that for what it’s worth. Treat the system as a set of prompts with good addresses. That’s how I use it.
What does a “blocked chakra” actually mean?
It’s a metaphor, and I’d hold it loosely. In practice people use it to describe a theme that feels stuck — creativity that won’t come, words that won’t get said. Nothing physical is measured or diagnosed by that language. I try to name the specific thing instead. For me, “I haven’t made anything in three weeks” tells me far more than “my sacral chakra is blocked” — it’s the sentence I can actually work with.
Do I need crystals or a wand to start?
Not at all. Stones are anchors for attention, not equipment — and my own wand sat unused on a windowsill for four months. Start with your hand and one honest sentence. If you do want a stone later, the heart chakra crystals guide and the crystal finder will point you at something, and the wand guide covers spotting dyed glass before you spend money.
Are chakra colors and chakra symbols the same system?
Related, but not the same age. The petal counts, seed syllables and geometry in the symbols come from Indian tantric texts developed over centuries. The tidy red-to-violet rainbow is a much later Western arrangement, as I explain in the colors guide. Recent doesn’t mean fake — plenty of meaningful practice is recent — but it’s worth knowing which one you’re holding.
Which chakra should a beginner start with?
The root, most of the time. In my experience, everything else is easier to feel once my body isn’t braced. That’s why I wrote the root affirmations body-first: settle, then speak. If safety genuinely isn’t the sore spot for you right now, ignore me and go where the flinch is.
Where to go next
If the stones caught your eye, the crystals hub and the affirmations hub are the two neighbors to this page — and there’s a free crystal finder, angel number decoder and moon phase tracker if you’d like something to play with while you decide where to start.
